An ethical dilemma always occurs with “a moral problem involving two or more mutually exclusive, morally correct actions”
Scenario:
There's an elderly patient under the Oncology team on the ward, diagnosed with Prostate Ca 7 years ago. Initially refused medical/surgical treatment in favour of alternative medicine, and now has been admitted for deterioration in his condition. He confides in you, aside from the medical team that he has intentions of committing suicide soon, after being told he does not have long to live.
This is the dilemma you are facing: Option 1- Maintain the patient's autonomy and confidentiality by keeping the secret from the team and allowing him to die without medical intervention. Option 2- Break autonomy and confidentiality to inform the team of his planned attempt, thereby monitoring and preventing suicide.
